Un contributo della toponomastica all’interpretazione dell’etrusco attraverso i nomi di Chiusi

= Paper =

by Massimiliano CANUTI, in Res Antiquae 22, 2025.

This paper tries to explain the original meaning of the city name ‘Chiusi’. Through the use of onomatology, dialectology, linguistics, topography and history, it was possible to reconstruct a picture that not only sheds light on toponymy, but also provides some insights for new interpretations on Etruscan lexicon. It’s more likely for clevsi-/cleuši- (the Etruscan name of Chiusi) to estabilish a semantic area relative to ‘closure’, while the hypotheses about kamarte- (the other ancient name of Chiusi) are labile and can involve Indo-European loans. Finally the proposals presented here produce a reflection on the limits and prospects of Etruscan hermeneutics.
