by Luc COURTOIS, in Luc COURTOIS (ed.), Les études orientales à l’Université de Louvain depuis 1834 (Histoire, 12), Brussels, 2021.

The present contribution is devoted to the figure of Paulin Ladeuze (1870-1940), whose orientalist activity took place in three stages : the doctorate at the Catholic University of Leuven, with a thesis in the field of oriental cenobitism (1892-1898) ; the professorship, during which the young researcher devoted himself mainly to patrology and neo-testamentary exegesis (1898-1909); and finally the rectorate, which put a final stop to his personal work, but did not leave him indifferent to developments in orientalism in Leuven. After an overview of his biography, the analysis will focus on his conversion to positive theology, before presenting his pioneering doctoral thesis on Saint Pacôme and Shenoute of Atripé, as well as his reception in the scholarly world of his time.
