This brief introduction sheds light on the meaning of the present collection of studies devoted to the development of the teaching of oriental languages and, more broadly, of orientalism, within the Catholic University of Louvain since 1834 : it brings together the papers presented at a colloquium held in Louvain-la-Neuve on 3 and 4 December 2018, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the opening of the College of Three Languages at the ancient University of Louvain in September 1518. This is in fact the “néo-louvaniste” contribution to the events that surrounded the fifth centenary of the death of Jerome de Busleyden in 2017, a great humanist, friend of Erasmus and Thomas More, and who was behind the foundation of the famous Collegium Trium Linguarum at the University of Leuven. After an exhibition (and two books) organised by Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven), the Flemish section of the University of Leuven, which was founded in 1968 (Erasmus' Dream. Collegium Trilingue. 1517-2017, Universiteitsbibliotheek, 19.10.2017-18.01.2018), a contemporary assessment, as it were, organised by the French-speaking section of Louvain-la-Neuve (UCLouvain), the sister university...
