Note sur les équidés de Cappadoce et la question d'un haras cilicien

= Paper =

by Olivier CASABONNE, in Res Antiquae 23, 2026.

The Cappadocien equine livestock was diverse and various, relating to the great deity of Mt. Argaeus. The author is interested in two types of equines : the so-called Nesean, from Media, and the onagers (or hemiones), Asiatic wild donkeys. For the first, he takes part for the hypothesis considering the Nesean as a high and robust horse, very prized by the Acheamenid, Parthian and Sassanian Persians. Concerning the onagers, Pliny the Elder indicates that they do not cross the border, i.e. the Taurus mounts, between Cappodocia and Cilicia. This short extract could indicate the existence of a very old renowned equine stud in Cilicia.
