by Camilla NORCIA, in Res Antiquae 22, 2025.

This paper focuses on the Centaur Cheiron, a complex and multifaceted figure in Greek mythology. Drawing on the Pindaric tradition and supported by archaeological evidence from various sites, it analyses the intricate aspects of a character associated with prophecy, healing, and the initiation of youth into adulthood. Particular attention is given to Cheiron’s sacred setting – a cave nestled in the wooded landscape of Mount Pelion – which reflects his role as the educator of heroes. The analysis also examines Cheiron’s unique association with female figures who share his pedagogical role. Within this mythical and sacred context, he emerges as a liminal and benevolent figure, deeply influential within the heroic narrative. Through a multidisciplinary approach that combines archaeological and literary perspectives, this study offers a revised and dynamic portrait of Cheiron as a figure capable of transformation and of transcending death itself.
