Les études arméniennes et géorgiennes et les études byzantines

by Bernard COULIE, in Luc COURTOIS (ed.), Les études orientales à l’Université de Louvain depuis 1834 (Histoire, 12), Brussels, 2021.

Armenian and Georgian studies, as well as Byzantine studies developed at the University of Louvain within the framework of studies on the Christian Orient. The first courses appear a little before the middle of the 19th century, but it is not until the beginning of the 20th century that these three fields occupy an official place in the study programs. For Armenian and Georgian studies, the emphasis is on the study of languages and the reading of ancient texts, from a philological perspective; the edition of texts, and in particular the edition of texts translated from Greek into Armenian and Georgian, occupies an important place in the research carried out by the first teachers (J. Lebon, J. Muyldermans). In the Byzantine domain, the approach is more historical (E. Stein). These three areas experienced significant development after the Second World War, under the leadership of G. Garitte and his successors (J. Lafontaine, J. Mossay).
