In this contribution, the author recounts the descriptions, excavations and studies of the Temple of Tuya, starting with the description of John Gardner Wilkinson published 1835 in his Topography of Thebes. The excavation conducted by Hans Steckeweh and Uvo Hölscher in 1931 on behalf of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago is described, followed by the clearing in the 1970s under the direction of Christiane Desroches-Noblecourt. The contributions of these works to our knowledge of the Temple of Tuya are summed up, for they lay the foundations on which the new excavation of the area, which started in 2010, were built upon. The Franco-German character of this archaeological project is also explained.
The two phases of the present work, each aimed at answering specific archaeological questions, are summarised. From 2010 to 2012, the first phase mainly addressed questions related to the origins of the temple. In 2012, it was concluded that the Temple of Tuya was an original monument, which had not been preceded by another. Since 2014, the work entered a second phase, with the study of the necropolis that developed in the temple during the Third Intermediate Period. This part of the work allowed for the rediscovery of the tomb of the divine adoratrice Karomama (22nd Dynasty).
