= Paper =

This article examines the now well-known inscription of Patara, the so-called Stadiasmos of Patara. Authors already argued that the long list of measures between cities of Lycia was useless as an itinerary and travel guide. But if it was meant as an instrument of imperial propaganda, the list itself and the introduction of the Stadiasmos (inscription B) allow to support a more pragmatic interpretation : the inscription testifies also to the appropriation of the ancient lycian road network by the new roman rule and its acceptance by Lycians.

= Paper =

The nomination of Cicero as governor obliged the orator to a long travel from Rome to Cilicia between april and august 51 B.C. Cicero had to organise a long journey to Asia Minor on road and sea, with the obsession to avoid a prorogation in his province. He travelled slowly, because of his need to develop social relations with his friends in Italy and Greece. The proconsul continued in his letters to be very interested in roman political life and developed a new interest to be considered as a good promagistrate by the inhabitants of his province, but did not consider geographical characteristics or insights during this journey.

This short contribution is relating to the scribe’s travels and functions during the second half of the thirteenth century B.C. For example it is possible today to determinate the function of the « scribes of the army », the « scribes-inspectors », the « copists » of old or provincial tablets coming from well-knowed sanctuaries ; we find also considerations about the wood-tablets often inscribed with the luwian hieroglyphic signs. Many Great-scribes (hitt.-luw. tuppalanuri-) were high dignitaries, bearing especially the title of DUMU.LUGAL « Prins ».

= Paper =

At the beginning of the IInd millennium BC, inhabitants from the Aššur city-state, on the Tigris river, organized large scale commercial exchange with Anatolia. People from Aššur exported tin and textiles in Central Anatolia and brought back gold and silver. They settled down in forty colonies, far away from their home. Their many travels between Aššur and Kaniš or inside Minor Asia are well-documented by the Assyrian merchants archives, mostly dated from the XIXth century B. C. and discovered at Kaniš, near Kayseri, in Turkey. The data concern preparation of the trips, the rest of men and animals in guest houses, and many problems encountered during the travel. In fact, mention of the death of donkeys on the way let us imagine that, during their journey, the caravans had to face many dangers.

À la recherche du passé. Le premier voyage en Asie Mineure de Charles Texier
= Paper =

Almost all we know about the journeys in the ancient times comes from the archeological researches undertaken by modern travellers. Charles Texier belongs to the last generation of adventurers and, at the same time, his discovery of the ruins near Boğazköy put him in the origin of a new science, Hittite studies. He is primarily known for his description of the capital of Hittites and of the monument of Yazilikaya, but he also discovered the site of some other ancient cities of Asia Minor, as Pessinunte. The investigations made by Charles Texier during his three journies between 1832 and 1834 were summarized in his monumental work Description de l’Asie Mineure. His contribution to the historical geography of the Asia Minor was highly regarded by the Academy of Arts and he can be seen as a pioneer of the Anatolian studies.

L’iconographie du sarcophage d’Ahirom. Un bref état de la question
= Paper =

The aim of the following article is a brief reassessment of the iconography on the sarcophagus of Ahirom, king of Byblos. During several years, most of the scholars in the field of Semitic epigraphy have tried to decipher the inscription while they have, at the same time, overlooked the bas-relief. However, in the last decade, thanks to the input of new iconographical facts, numerous studies have contributed to a better understanding of the scenes on the Ahirom-sarcophagus. This modest contribution to the issue is a plea for a dialogue between iconography and epigraphy, between picture and word, both enlightening each other.

Les matres lectionis en phénicien. Nouvelles orientations
= Paper =

20th century scholars declared that a “system of purely consonantal writing was rigorously maintained in Phoenician” and “no matres lectionis would appear in the orthography”. However, during the last thirty years, sporadic presence of matres lectionis has been revealed in Ugaritic, early Aramaic, early Hebrew and early Moabite. An objective survey of the earliest Phoenician inscriptions reveals that it was also the case in Phoenician epigraphy, especially in proper names. This use throws some light on the adoption of the Phoenician alphabet by Greeks and/or Phrygians.

"Genus numeri".
= Paper =

At Tarquinia, the so-called « Ara della Regina » shows exceptional proportions when compared to other Etruscan temples and that since the first half of the VIth century B.C. An analysis of the plans related to the successive construction phases hints at a unique layout principle governing not only the exterior walls of the temple, but also its inner subdivisions and the dimensions of the great Archaic terrace on which it is built. A simple geometrical scheme, based on the method of diagonal depth projection (rabattement) of a square or rectangle, seems to endow the different parts of the edifice with the following proportions: 1 : √2, 1 : √3 and 1 : √5. Though less elaborate, the same process has already been observed in the other religious pole of the city, namely the sacred area of the Pian di Civita.

Tra etimologia e ricostruzione culturale. Il caso del panfilio επίστασις
= Paper =

= Paper =

The latin conjugation obeys a law of phonetics very general which limits considerably the successions of consonants with regard to their frequency. It is to the point that we find never a succession of consonants in the articulation of two morphes. It entails a structuralization of the verbal forms such as we can synthetize these forms from morphes simple and invariant. The Latin declension obeys the same law as the conjugation but, in the nominal forms the analogy has no same power and, although there are not either successions of consonants, the system is far from being also perfect.

= Paper =

Tacitus and Sima Qian (ca. 140-85 BC, author of the Shiji, the Records of the Historian) are eminent representatives of Roman and ancient Chinese historiography. The starting-point of the paper is a striking parallel between the two historians: During the reign of autocratic emperors both authors undergo experiences which not only affect them on a personal level, but also influence their historiographic practice. The paper traces this influence with respect to the representations of rulers (Tiberius and Wendi) and of second and third rank characters such as senators, ministers, generals, and – in the case of Sima Qian – also of people from other walks of life.

Il santuario, i rituali ed il wanax
= Paper =
