El mito de fundación de Lugdunum. Ensayo de lectura estructural
= Paper =

= Paper =

The attestation in Thessalian dialect inscriptions (3rd/2nd Cent.) of forms which are unexpected from the etymological point of view may be explained as due to the confluence of two factors: the influence of the literary (Attic and Ionic) prose and, at the same time, the tendence to give them a Thessalian colour. This is visible even in the case of three forms which show unexpected geminates. In enneka, the geminate reflects the thessalisation of Hom. Ion. Att. ei{neka, which goes back to the Homeric metrical lenghtening of PGr *eneka (: Myc. e-ne-ka /(h)eneka/): a new etymology of the form is proposed in support of this view. The same explanation applies for the theonym Ennodia (as against neut. pl. enodia ‘paths’ in the same inscription), which reflects Eijnodivh/a (Hsd.+), Hom. eijnovdio~. For its part, the place name Govnnoi (Govnno~) reflects Hom. Gouneuv~, gounov~ ‘hill’, which show the phonetic outcome of *ĝon-ó-. The irregular spellings <enn>, <onn> turn out to reflect an artificial thessalisation of Ion.Hom. <ein>, <oun>, whatever their origin could be, at a time when Thessalians write stubbornly in dialect, as a manifestation of their identity.

Allitérations et assonances associées à l'emploi des impressifs de sonorité dans la langue homérique
= Paper =

This paper aims to show the conditions under which alliterations and assonances appear in the Homeric epos. One has intentionally restricted the corpus to the close context of impressive verbs denoting a noise, in order to determine by what the presence of such sound effects could have been conditionned : contrary to the expectations, the associations of such verbs and such sound effects are absolutely not systematic, but they are concentrating only when the dramatic tension in the narration reaches a peak, as if the drama of the situation had to be heightened by the accumulation of expressive devices involving the signifier. Along the same lines it has been observed that the expressive hapax crovmado" appears to be brought about by an alliterative context.

Le délit de desertio et de transfugium dans les guerres civiles à Rome sous la République
= Paper =

In times of civil war, desertion, which is a crime punishable by death, almost looks like a minor offense in the Roman army. Sanctions, usually reserved for deserters and defectors, are very rarely applied during the intestine wars of the Republic. The chiefs of the army, by buying the loyalty of soldiers openly, encourage and orchestrate desertion. In the context of chaos that characterized the conflicts between Romans led to a suspension of normal operation of the army, desertion is used as a political weapon by the military officials and political parties to weaken or eliminate the opponent.

De Baghdad à Cordoue : une migration de la tradition grammaticale arabe
= Paper =

The Arabic Grammatical Tradition aims at studying the Kalâm-ʾl-ʿArab or “Language of the Arabs”, relying on texts written before 130/750. ʾAbû ʿAlî al-Qâlî (Manâzgird 280/893 – Cordoba 355/966), after having learnt Arabic grammar in Baghdad, has left the city in 328/939 for teaching in Cordoba from 330/941, applying the principles of Basra Grammatical School Tradition. He wrote several books, but one of them may be considered as typical for this Tradition : “The Book of Shortened and Extended Noun”, a critical edition of which has recently been published by Dr. al-Haridi. Al-Qâlî does no more regard “shortened noun” (ʾism maqṣûr) and “reduced noun” (ʾism manqûṣ) as synonymous as Ancient Grammarians did. In his view, a shortened noun is a noun where a /y/ or a /w/ is included as a radical. He looks for a main structural principle organizing grammatical rules, putting aside the nawâdir or unusual words. So that we may think about him as occupying an intermediary position between Ibn Sarrâǧ and Ibn Ǧinnî in the history of Arabic Grammatical Tradition.

Le(s) nom(s) de la montagne en louvite
= Paper =

The name of the mountain in luwian raises difficulties, because of the use of the ideograms in both the hieroglyphic and cuneiform writings. Whereas *ariyatti- is an excellent candidate for cuneiform ḪUR.SAG-ti, it seems increasingly certain that the hieroglyphic sign MONS was read wati-. I showed that watti- “mountain” and other terms etymologically connected seem attested in cuneiform luwian as well. It is not, therefore, unimaginable that ḪUR.SAG-ti was read watti-.

Quelques remarques autour de *y > lydien d*
= Paper =

Ten years ago, H. C. Melchert developed an interesting hypothesis about the fate of *y in Lydian: in certain environments, *y > d. In this paper, a new etymology for the Greek ethnic λυδος “Lydian” is proposed, which seems to corroborate Melcher’s theory: it could derive from the name of the Luvian country Lūya > *lūda → Greek λυδος.
